Project Number 1

Summary:

Part of a joint venture between EPA, TURI and RI DEM to reduce the use of TCE in the Providence, RI area, three trials were conducted on this client’s requirement of cleaning within 2 minutes (current rate with TCE) several testing parameters were adjusted and evaluated. In the end, Alconox Detergent 8 worked very well at the 10% concentration and 130 F temperature. The lower concentration (5%) also worked fairly well at 130, but had better results at the 150 F temperature. Client has requested on-site assistance for implementing the changes. TURI and EPA went to facility to conduct real-time testing.

Test Objective:

To identify an alternative to TCE for cleaning brass buckles.

Product Use:

Belt buckles and pins
Trial Number Date Run Purpose Success Rating
0 08/31/2006 To evaluate selected products for removing first supplied buffing compound using immersion cleaning Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
1 09/05/2006 To evaluate successful cleaners on second supplied buffing compound using immersion cleaning Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
2 09/05/2006 To reevaluate successful products on second supplied contaminant using ultrasonic cleaning. A follow up test, usually based on company input.
3 09/05/2006 To evaluate one product on first supplied buffing compound using immersion cleaning. A follow up test, usually based on company input.
4 09/05/2006 To evaluate the three successful products on the third supplied buffing compound using immersion cleaning. Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
5 10/02/2006 To evaluate successful cleaner at various operating conditions to meet the 2 minute cleaning time. Results suggest a scale-up feasible match for cleaning chemistry and equipment. Pilot plant study with actual parts recommended.
6 10/31/2006 To evaluate selected cleaner using spray washing. Results suggest a scale-up feasible match for cleaning chemistry and equipment. Pilot plant study with actual parts recommended.
7 12/11/2006 To evaluate a client requested product for cleaning buffing compounds from their brass parts. A follow up test, usually based on company input.
