Project Number 1

Summary:

Part of a joint venture between EPA, TURI and RI DEM to reduce the use of TCE in the Providence, RI area, five trials were conducted on this client’s buffing compounds. A 10% solution of Polyspray Jet 790 XS at the 150 F was the only product that was successful in cleaning the three part types supplied for cleaning. Parts have been sent back to the client for evaluation.

Test Objective:

To find an alternative to TCE for removing buffing compounds from brass parts.

Product Use:

Medals, decorative products
Trial Number Date Run Purpose Success Rating
0 08/16/2006 To evaluate selected products for buffing compound removal. Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
1 08/17/2006 To evaluate previously tested products using ultrasonic energy. A follow up test, usually based on company input.
2 08/17/2006 To evaluate top two products at higher temperature to achieve higher efficiencies. A follow up test, usually based on company input.
3 08/22/2006 To evaluate cleaners on water-based buffing compound using immersion cleaning. Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
4 10/16/2006 To evaluate selected product for cleaning supplied parts using ultrasonic energy Results suggest a scale-up feasible match for cleaning chemistry and equipment. Pilot plant study with actual parts recommended.
5 12/08/2006 To evaluate selected product for cleaning both buffing compound and oil using supplied parts. Results suggest a scale-up feasible match for cleaning chemistry and equipment. Pilot plant study with actual parts recommended.
6 02/06/2007 To determine if temperature or concentration were the cause for the tarnish seen on the parts cleaned during the on-site piloting. A follow up test, usually based on company input.
7 02/06/2007 To evaluate two most effective products found for this client for tarnishing effect with solution at room temperature. A follow up test, usually based on company input.
8 02/07/2007 To evaluate new, lower pH cleaners for cleaning brass parts that have been tarnishing with the previous cleaners we found that were effective. A follow up test, usually based on company input.
9 02/07/2007 To evaluate selected products on a wide range of client selected parts for cleaning and tarnishing. A follow up test, usually based on company input.
