Trial Number 0

Trial Purpose:

To evaluate supplied products for performance following the Vi-Jon hand cleaning standard.

Date Run:

12/20/2016

Experiment Procedure:

Soil was created by mixing about 4 tablespoons of the synthetic carpet soil with 100 mL of water. Photographs were taken of the initial condition of each experimenter’s hands. The initial condition of the hands was also noted as moist, normal, dry or very dry. A quarter size amount of the soil was then applied to one hand. The experimenter then rubbed their hands together for 10 seconds and photographs of the dirty hands were taken. Then, one pump of the appropriate soap was dispensed into the tester’s hand. Hands were rubbed for 20 seconds with soap and water and then rinsed with just water for an additional 20 seconds. Then hands were dried with a paper towel for 20 seconds and the results were photographed. Cleanliness of hands directly after washing was rated from 1-5 with 1 being no signs of soil and 5 being that the hands were continually covered in soil. Then, lathering/rinsing were rated from 1-5, with 1 being lots of lathering-easy rinsing and 5 being no lathering-hard rinsing. Lastly from 1 minute, 5 minutes, 20 minutes, and 60 minutes after washing the skin conditions were monitored. Skin condition was also rated 1-5, a 1 was smooth and soft condition while 5 was very dry- cracking skin.

Success Rating:

Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.

Conclusion:

According to cleanliness ratings, the Dial Complete had consistently lower ratings than the Vi-Jon product. Of those participants who showed to have lower cleanliness ratings, it seemed many did little to no lathering or just some lathering. In comparison, those who showed higher cleanliness ratings with the Vi-Jon product seemed to have done lots of lathering. Next, the skin condition was examined at 1 minute, 5 minutes, 20 minutes and 60 minutes after the initial cleaning. The results showed that participants were prone to dryer skin conditions as time went on with both products. The participants with already dry hands did experience a gradual increase in dryness with time, with most of those with initially normal to moist skin also experiencing some minimal drying over time. The photographic evidence seems to point toward the Vi-Jon product being the better of the two products.
