Project Number 1

Summary:

Testing was conducted over a one-month period on five contaminants using two forms of mechanical energy. An attempt was made during the evaluations to identify a product that could be used on all of the contaminants. Despite this effort, a single solution was not identified. However, six products were found to work on two or more of the contaminants. The wax was the only contaminant that was not cleanable by any of the products that were successful on the other four contaminants. Metabolix E3HB was the only product capable of cleaning four of the contaminants. The Vertec Bio Solvents Ink Zapper was successful on three contaminants but was not tested on the grease (not enough grease to test). Company called to update lab that one product, Metabolix E3HB, was going to be piloted for the removal of the Microshield Stop Off contaminant.

Test Objective:

To eliminate TCE and reduce Acetone.

Product Use:

Medical devices/tools, hermetic seals, electronic packages
Trial Number Date Run Purpose Success Rating
0 02/10/2004 To evaluate alternatives to TCE for wax removal Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
1 02/11/2004 To evaluate more alternatives for wax removal Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
2 02/11/2004 To evaluate successful cleaners using elevated temperatures A follow up test, usually based on company input.
3 02/13/2004 To evaluate successful cleaners using ultrasonic energy A follow up test, usually based on company input.
4 02/23/2004 To evaluate cleaners on second contaminant Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
5 02/23/2004 To evaluate successful products at longer cleaning times A follow up test, usually based on company input.
6 02/23/2004 To evaluate partially successful products with ultrasonic cleaning A follow up test, usually based on company input.
7 03/04/2004 To evaluate cleaners on supplied grease using immersion cleaning Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
8 03/04/2004 To evaluate cleaners from previous grease trial using ultrasonic energy A follow up test, usually based on company input.
9 03/08/2004 To evaluate past cleaners on next supplied contaminant Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
10 03/08/2004 To evaluate cleaners on red dye using ultrasonic energy A follow up test, usually based on company input.
11 03/09/2004 To evaluate past cleaners on last supplied contaminant Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.
12 03/12/2004 To evaluate successful cleaners on initial wax Test showed little or no promise.

Project Number 2

Summary:

Using the laboratory's database for solvent cleaning substitution, the lab generated the following lists of products. The first list contains products that have been evaluated at SSL under similar conditions to the client's criteria. The second list contains vendor suggested products based on client supplied data.

Test Objective:

To generate a list of alternatives for cleaning ceramics using ultrasonic cleaning
Trial Number Date Run Purpose Success Rating
0 03/07/2005 To generate a list of products that can be used to clean ceramics using ultrasonics Technology Transfer.
