Trial Number 1

Trial Purpose:

To understand how much foam is produced from the Virdivis FB1000 upon agitation and to test different methods for reducing foaming. Additionally, to compare the foaming qualities of Virdivis and other safer alternative products to brewing caustics.

Experiment Procedure:

Thirty ml of the Virdivis FB1000 20% at room temperature was poured into a graduated cylinder (250 ml).  The top of the graduated cylinder was covered, while the graduated cylinder was vigorously shaken for five seconds.  After being shaken, the amount of foam generated was measured.  This same process was repeated again with 30 ml of Virdivis FB1000 20% at 160F, and 30 ml of Virdivis FB1000 20% + 2.5% of a defoaming agent (Ethox L-61 nonionic surfactant).

Trial Results:

30ml Virdivis 20% @ room temperature: generated 80ml of foam

30ml Virdivis 20% @ 160F: generated 60ml of foam

30ml Virdivis 20% + 2.5% Ethox L-61 @ room temperature: generated 20ml of foam

30ml of EcoSafeway High pH cleaner 50% @ room temperature: generated 0ml of foam

30ml of EcoSafeway Descaler60 50% @ room temperature: generated 0ml of foam

Success Rating:

Results successful using TACT (time, agitation, concentration, and temperature, as well as rinsing and drying) and/or other cleaning chemistries examined.

Conclusion:

While increasing the temperature does decrease the amount of foam generated, the reduction of foam generation was much more significant with the addition of the defoaming agent. The addition of the surfactant significantly (75% reduction) reduced the foam in the lab compared to heating the cleaner (25% reduction). 

The comparative safer alternative products produced no foam upon agitation.
